Go lessons for beginners: stop feeling lost, start playing

Go has a reputation for being hard to learn. It isn't. What it is, is easy to feel lost in: a blank 19×19 board with no obvious first move sends most beginners away before they ever play a real game. That feeling, not the difficulty, is what makes people quit.

A teacher fixes that in the first lesson by getting you playing, usually on a small 9×9 board where a whole game takes a few minutes and you can see why moves work. You don't need fifty josekis or a wall of Japanese terms. You need three or four ideas — stay connected, make two eyes, don't try to save everything — and someone watching to tell you which one you just broke.

That is the whole loop: you play, your teacher stops you the moment a habit costs you, you understand why, and you play again. It is how "you're trying to rescue every stone" or "you're playing on the edge too early" gets caught in real time, in your own language, instead of read in a book and never noticed in your own games.

I don't know the rules yet. Is that ok?

Yes. A first lesson can start from "this is a liberty" and have you playing a real 9×9 game by the end. Beginners are the easiest students to help, because the habits haven't set yet.

What do I need to start?

A browser and a microphone. Your teacher runs the shared board and walks you through every step, with captions in your language if you don't share one.

How strong are the teachers?

Every teacher is pro-level or stronger. A strong player teaching a beginner is not overkill: they see the bad habit forming three moves before you do, and stop it before it sticks.
