PAN Wenjun
9DAbout Me
Hello, Go fans in the world! I'm PAN Wenjun, and I'm currently an Amateur 8-dan player based in Qingdao. I used to be a professional 3-dan, but in 2018 I made an unusual decision — I gave up my professional ranking and returned to the amateur circuit. In the years since, I've gone on to win a string of national amateur titles.
I play at 8-dan, and I teach at 9-dan.
Go isn't only my competition — it's what I've devoted myself to teaching for years. I founded my own Go school and have trained nearly 100 students, and I wrote A Fun Dictionary of Go Terms (《趣味围棋术语辞典》), which received Second Prize at the 29th Northern Ten-Province Outstanding Science & Technology Book Awards.
My Teaching Style
A lot of players assume that getting stronger just means playing more games and studying more pro records. But after my own path — from professional all the way to the top of the amateur scene — I'm more convinced than ever that what really determines your strength is the thinking process running through your head on every single move.
In what I call my "champion's training method," I hold nothing back: I walk you through the full thought process a student should have when training — what to consider first when you face a position, what to rule out, and the right order to make your judgments. My goal isn't to make you memorize more joseki. It's to turn your vague "feel" for the board into clear, repeatable judgment, so that when a game is over you actually know why you played the way you did.
Whether you're trying to break through an amateur plateau or build a more solid foundation, I'll review your own games with you and get to the bottom of what's holding you back.
